Ground Breaking- Epidural Stimulation Study makes movement and feeling possible once again...

Dustin Shillcox, paraplegic, motivational speaker, and Reeve research participant, is excited to have been invited to the upcoming Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation private reception event on Sunday, September 27th, 2015. Dustin has been asked to briefly share his story of how he was once told he would never have movement below his chest after a horrific car accident and today he is standing and moving his legs once again. Dustin is one of 4 participants in the epidural stimulation study seeing, feeling and experiencing the effects of the ground breaking medical study. The Reeve Foundation is looking to grow the study and help others. Take a look at the heartwarming video:

Who's your Superman??

We all have heroes in our lives; the ones we look up to, and who keep us motivated and pushing forward. For me, I have a lot of people that I look up to and who won't let me give up, no matter how rough it gets!! One person in particular is Christopher Reeve, this is a guy that I've never met before, but I have had the privilege to work with his foundation. The amazing things the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is doing and have done has given me more drive, belief in myself and  for the future of people in wheelchairs! I have had a great opportunity to be a part of research program for spinal cord injuries and at first the only goal in my mind was to get up out of this wheelchair and walk again. As I've been a part of the research project, I have seen great progress and have realized that my goals not only to walk again, but it's more important to me, that we all do this together. 

 

Christopher Reeve said "I dream of a world with empty wheelchairs."

I'm going to keep pushing forward and doing everything I can to inspire others and help get us closer to the dream that Christopher Reeve had. Who are the heroes in your life? It's important to let them know how they make you feel and keep pushing forward. Remember: gratitude is an attitude. I am thankful for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and everyone who works there; they are doing great things and bettering people's lives!

Dustin Shillcox’s life drastically changed when he was in a car accident August 2010 and sustained major spinal cord damage, a broken upper arm, collapsed lungs, broken ribs, cracked sternum & mild brain injury. Dustin’s complete T-5 spinal cord injury (SCI) left him with no feeling below his mid-chest, causing paralysis from the chest down.

Now paralyzed, and living his life in a wheel chair, Dustin was told he would never again be able to move below his waist again, but after participating in a cutting edge SCI research project, at the University of Kentucky in Louisville, he is now able to move his legs and stand once again. Dustin is living his life to the fullest, sharing his story, journey of overcoming obstacles, and faith while raising funds for spinal cord research. Through his motivational speaking and the Dustin Shillcox Foundation, he is helping to improve the lives of people in wheelchairs.
