New York City Marathon

Hand Cycling- Because Running is Not An Option...Yet...

On November 1st I will be taking my hand cycle 26 miles in the New York City marathon, and can't wait!! I will be riding for Team Reeve and this will be my first time at this event. There is going to be over 50,000 people in the race, so I'm sure its going to be an experience I'll never forget. I try and ride my bike 4 times a week and making sure that I go at least 14 or more miles each day. Between all the dieting, working out, and biking I'm feeling pretty good about myself and can't wait to see what happens. Stay tuned!!!!

Dustin Shillcox’s life drastically changed when he was in a car accident August 2010 and sustained major spinal cord damage, a broken upper arm, collapsed lungs, broken ribs, cracked sternum & mild brain injury. Dustin’s complete T-5 spinal cord injury (SCI) left him with no feeling below his mid-chest, causing paralysis from the chest down.

Now paralyzed, and living his life in a wheel chair, Dustin was told he would never again be able to move below his waist again, but after participating in a cutting edge SCI research project, at the University of Kentucky in Louisville, he is now able to move his legs and stand once again. Dustin is living his life to the fullest, sharing his story, journey of overcoming obstacles, and faith while raising funds for spinal cord research. Through his motivational speaking and the Dustin Shillcox Foundation, he is helping to improve the lives of people in wheelchairs.

Changes- You will be defined by how you handle it

Own the Moment

It's hard to believe that winter is almost here, time flies! From winter, summer, fall, and spring I try to enjoy every moment possible even when things are going horribly wrong. Life will through us curve balls and things change, but we all own the moment, we get to decide on the choices we make and that will determine the outcome of your future. When times are hard keep pushing forward, because you're not going to be defined by the challenge you come up against, but you'll be defined by how handle it. Make that choice and improve your situation and inspire others to do the same!! -Dustin

Back to the Outdoors

Outdoor Life in A Wheelchair...

Before my car accident and back/spinal injury (that caused paralysis) one of my favorite things to do was be in the mountains, hiking, seeing beautiful scenery, and enjoying the outdoors. It's been hard for me getting back into doing all the activities that I use to do. It's helpful to talk with others and learn a different way on how to make things happen.

For me, getting back into the mountains in the winter time, I now use a snowmobile and in the summer I've been on a track chair. So its pretty cool, finding new adaptive equipment that can allow me to enjoy and do the things that I love doing!!

The Big Idea- Dreaming of Walking Again

The Christopher Reeve Foundation has started The Big Idea; it is a campaign geared to raise 15 million dollars so that 36 more people can be implanted with the epidural stimulator (similar to the one I have). I will be participating in the upcoming New York City Marathon to help raise funds.

The Bigger Goal behind The Big Idea: "When the benefits show how much of an improvement the stimulators are having on people, then they can make this a treatment that everyone with spinal cord injuries can have. The stimulator can improve our quality of life and the over all heath for people with spinal cord injuries, ultimately reaching our dream to walk again."

Earlier this month, I had the best time meeting with Chris Bridgman and his family in California where they put on a wonderful event for The Big Idea!! It's exciting to see people coming together as we all work towards the dream that Christopher Reeve had, a world with empty wheelchairs.

New York City Marathon By Way of Hand Cycle

Motivational Speaker and Paraplegic,  Dustin Shillcox, to participate in New York City Marathon

"November 1st is the New York City marathon and it's going to be a blast. I've been training, working out, and dieting trying to prepare myself for my first time in this marathon."

I'm going to be riding my hand cycle for Team Reeve and the goal we have right now is to raise money for The Big Idea. Most of you know that I have been blessed to be able to take part in an amazing research for spinal cord injuries and have had great results. The reason for The Big Idea is to raise 15 million dollars, so they can implant 36 more people with the epidural stimulator. When they can raise the funds, we can show the benefit that it is having on people with spinal cord injuries, then make it a procedure available for everyone. I'm going to keep pushing forward and doing everything I can to help raise money, and improve people's lives.

You can support this great cause and sponsor me in the marathon by donating nowTeam Reeve
